Blog Action Day
Today is Blog Action Day. A day where over 15,000 bloggers around the world are uniting to write about the environment.
Normally, I'm not much of an environmentalist, but there are a few areas where I try to reduce my impact on the environment. One of those is compact fluorescent light bulbs. I always buy compact fluorescent light bulbs to use around the house. These light bulbs use on average four times less energy than a standard 60 watt light bulb. Assuming you only have one light on in any room that you happen to be in, (And you do only have one light on in the room you are currently in, right? Because if you aren't in a room, why is the light still on?) and you only need lights on an average of 4 hours a day, by using compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs you use 67000 fewer watt-hours of electricity in a year. The next time you get a power bill take a look at how much it costs you per kilowatt-hour and think how much you could be saving yourself and the environment if that was 67 kilowatt-hours less per room in your house per year.
This is just one helpful hint on improving our environment, here are some others from bloggers that I regularly read:

Here's my Two Green Centsworth!
Hi Zybron,
Thanks for the mention. It's much appreciated.
Thanks very much for the mention. I was wondering why I got a surge of traffic from your blog today!
Funnily enough, despite my reservations about global warming being a man-made problem, I still use energy-saving lightbulbs.
Why? Well, like you said, it's more economical, to begin with. It makes absolutely zero sense to waste money on higher electricity bills from traditional lightbulbs. This is also why I use rechargable batteries.
However I also don't deny that mankind does contribute to global warming, so any way we can reduce our impact should be considered. My problem has always been with the lies we're told.
Hybrid cars, for example, are actually being shown to have a greater carbon footprint than traditional cars. And cost more to run. So why on Earth should we use them?
We're not told about these things, or about the studies that show record ice cap growth, or the studies that suggest in three or four years from now the globe will start to cool again as it did between the 40s and 70s.
I think we should use hybrid cars for the same reason we use energy saving light bulbs. It costs less. That's usually my first concern, honestly. The other thing about hybrid cars is it makes us that much closer to not being dependent upon oil, which I would be very happy about.
And it is true that we are often not informed about the studies that are done that aren't as popular or go against the overall consensus. Is that because they don't make as interesting a story or because of the validity of the finding? On that, I'm not sure.
