Worldwide D&D Game Day Recap

This last Saturday was Worldwide D&D Game Day. I previously mentioned that the local HobbyTown USA was actually participating in the event, which somewhat surprised me. As it turns out, their D&D section was rather light and pretty much what I expected from a store that definitely caters to more mainstream hobbies than Dungeons & Dragons.

It was somewhat of an adventure that day for my family to actually recover the treasure trove hidden at the HobbyTown. Our local store opens at 10:00 am and figuring this event to be sort of a first come first serve type of thing, we are ready to leave at about 9:45 to arrive at the store shortly after it opens.

Upon our arrival we spend a few minutes looking around the store, mainly just to check it out. I love hobby shops. I used to be really into radio controlled vehicles when I was a kid and something about looking around a hobby shop brings that back to my mind. The days spent paging through the new issue of RC Modeler wishing I could afford some of the really cool RC cars, planes, and helicopters pictured within.

However, there appears to be no sign at all of anything D&D related. My wife questions the man behind the counter, who points out the tiny stack of D&D books and miniatures we had previously missed. While chatting with him about why we are here we discover that another employee, who happens to be a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in some time, is handling the Game Day event sometime after she gets in at noon.

Back home we go to wait until noon when we can again forage out into the wilderness of the dreaded Mall to capture the lost treasure.

After a nice lunch, we arrive back at the HobbyTown and spend a few minutes chatting with my friend only to discover that she isn't running the event until around 2:00 that afternoon. Fortunately, it was a friend of mine, otherwise, I may have given up at that point, but she was willing to offer us a selection of the miniatures and the other materials for the event.

To the left is a shot of all of what we managed to acquire from HobbyTown for the game day event. Three miniatures - one for my wife, my son, and myself. The accompanying adventure and map, both of which seem fairly decent, though I rarely use modules at this point in time. The adventure is designed for a 4th level party of adventurers. I was somewhat surprised that it wasn't a first level group of adventurers, but perhaps the idea was to introduce characters that have a bit more capabilities than at first level. Some of the miniatures, though, are above fourth level, though, so I'm really uncertain exactly what they expected from this adventure. I'll admit, I didn't read the adventure more than to glance at it, so perhaps the one 6th level miniature we received was designed to be run by the DM?DnD Game Day 11-3-2007 1-57-28 PM

In each of the miniature boxes, there is a fairly cheap, but serviceable miniature, a d20, a tiny pencil, and an accompanying miniature character sheet and character card describing the miniature's stats. It's definitely a decent little set that contains everything you would need to run a little introductory adventure for a beginning group. Everything, that is, except the promised Dungeon Master's dice set, which should contain the additional dice necessary to actually roll for anything not using a d20. I don't know if HobbyTown simply didn't receive the DM's set or that since my friend was just opening the box that all the materials came in that she didn't see the DM's dice set. I suspect it was the later, since she was able to find the adventure and map.

Overall, it was a fun little outing. It is always fun to see my son's excitement for events such as this. He was thrilled to actually be getting his own miniature and die. I suspect that once he is just a bit older and can actually read and write on his own, he'll be joining us at the table with his own character. I'll have to start his own collection of dice soon.

Did any of you check out Worldwide D&D Game Day at your local gaming store? If so, leave a comment about the event.
